For me travelling solo was something I never really planned on doing, I kind of just fell into it and haven't looked back since. There's just so much to gain from venturing the world by yourself, there's so much to learn, so much to see and best of all so many memories to make.
So for those of you who are unsure about travelling alone or maybe a little nervous, I wanted to share my top 10 things that I've personally experience from travelling solo to help you pluck up the courage to dive right in.
1. NEVER MISS ANOTHER TRIP
Gone are the days of missing out on trips because someone in the group has dropped out and then one after one, what was meant to be a 10 person trip has now become a no person trip because you're the only one left.
This happens so often. But the great thing about solo travel is that you get to go on every trip you plan because there's no one to drop out at the last minute!
There is no better way to test your independence than to travel to a foreign place by yourself. The only person you have to rely on is you. That means waking yourself up, deciding your plans, thinking completely for yourself. With you and only you to rely on, you'll find yourself in situations outside of your comfort zone, but you'll learn to find solutions to all your problems. You may even surprise yourself just how capable you are.
3. YOUR TRIP YOUR WAY
This means NO MORE COMPROMISING! From start to end you get to do what you want to do. Get up late, go for hikes, stay by the pool, whatever it is that you enjoy doing you can do. Never leave a country thinking 'ohh I wish I had done...'
4. MAKE NEW FRIENDS
This is one of the coolest parts of travelling. Meeting new people have ones in a lifetime experience that only a handful of people can relate to. People from all walks of life travel the world and chances are you'll meet some incredible people that may even end up being lifelong friends. The key to this is being open minded, make sure to just have fun with it.
5. CONFIDENCE BOOST
As you move around and travel you'll learn so much both about you and the world/country. Being able to get yourself out of sticky situations or learning new skills and knowledge can be a real confidence boast.
6. LIVE IN THE MOMENT
If you take away anything from travelling it's this, yesterday is different from today, and today will be different from tomorrow. Every day you travel something new a different happens, as a result you have to live in the moment. You lean to make the best out of every situation.
If you spend a lot of time with yourself this should hopefully be the outcome. But really, you spend so much time by yourself and/or in new environments that you get to understand yourself a lot more and become more self aware.
8. CULTURAL AWARENESS
This is why I travel. I love learning about new cultures! When you learn about someones culture, you're able to understand them more, understand how they thing and why they do the things they do. Being more culturally aware helps to knock down a 'walls' you may have had and replace it with greater empathy.
9. RESET LIFE
Sometimes we all just need a break, an escape, a breather. Travel often allows you to get away from the stresses of your everyday life and reset and rethink or just have fun. A change of environment can be very good for you psyche.
10. GREATER SELF-LOVE
This my sound sappy but its true. Travelling gives you a new lease on life. You have so many experience and have had so much self growth that you really learn to love yourself more. There's a sense of pride and accomplishment you get from travelling.
So those are my 10 reasons for why you should travel solo. Let me know f you have any extra stuff to add or let me know what you're nervous about when it comes to solo travel.
